Government size and extent of public enterprises are of crucial impacts on economy. Thus, one of the main objectives of the governments is to achieve full employment. This paper investigates the effects of government size on unemployment rate in Iran’s economy using annual data during 1959-2011. It applies Pesaran, Shin and Smith (PSS) bounds testing approach to estimate an Unrestricted Error Correction Model (UECM), which derives both dynamic and long-term relationships. The finding of the research shows that the government size has a significant positive effect on unemployment rate, indicating that reducing the size of government would lead to reduction of unemployment rate in Iran. With increases in size of government, the crowding out effect in the form of private investment is decreased. As a result, productivity growth and international competition are reduced, then the unemployment rate is increased. The estimation of the ECM model shows that the error term is negative and statistically significant. The Error Correction Term (ECT) is relatively low (-0.27) indicating a slow adjustment toward the equilibrium. یکی از موضوعات بحث برانگیز و نسبتاً قدیمی در اقتصاد که همواره مورد توجه اقتصاددانان بوده، موضوع مربوط به گسترش حجم و اندازه دولت و پیامدهای این امر برای متغیرهای کلان اقتصادی است. دخالت دولت و اندازه فعالیت‌های آن، نقش تعیین کننده ای در وضعیت اقتصاد دارد. از این رو، یکی از وظایف اصلی دولت، ایجاد کار برای همه به منظور رسیدن به سطح اشتغال کامل است. این تحقیق به بررسی اثر اندازه دولت بر روی نرخ بیکاری در اقتصاد ایران با استفاده از دادههای سالانه در دوره 1338 تا 1390 به روش آزمون کرانههای پسران، شین و اسمیث، مبتنی بر رویکرد تخمین مدل تصحیح خطای غیر مقید (UECM)شامل رابطه پویا و رابطه تعادلی بلند مدت می‌پردازد. نتایج تحقیق نشان می‌دهد که اندازه دولت، اثر مثبت و معناداری بر روی نرخ بیکاری دارد و برای کاهش نرخ بیکاری، باید اندازه دولت در اقتصاد ایران کاهش یابد. با افزایش اندازه دولت در اقتصاد، ازدحام در بخش خصوصی مخصوصاً سرمایه‌گذاری خصوصی، و در نتیجه، رشد بهرهوری و رقابت بین المللی کاهش، و نرخ بیکاری افزایش می‌یابد. ضریب ECM نشان داده است که در هر دوره، 27 درصد از عدم تعادل کوتاه مدت بیکاری در جهت رسیدن به تعادل بلند مدت، تعدیل میشود.
